Final SCAD Midterms

The start of 2023 has been exhilarating! This is the last quarter of my undergraduate degree, and the time is flying by. Midterms have just ended, and I have crossed two major items off my to-do list for the winter quarter.

The first event that I took part in this quarter was SCAD Startup. I have participated in SCAD Startup every year I have been at SCAD. This year the theme was “embrace the unorthodox”, and I could not have been happier with what my team came up with. I have always wanted to try designing a toy, it was even in the running for being my senior project before I chose museum studies, but I have never gotten the chance. When we began brainstorming, the concept of personal well-being and mental health kept coming up.

We were interested in the concept, but we were looking for a way to make it new and “embrace the unorthodox”. The way our team did this was by flipping certain concepts on their head. The first being that mental health is only about you looking after yourself. The second was that toys are only for children. And the third was that everything has to be solved with an app. This led us to create Toto. A toy for adults that lets you take care of yourself by taking care of someone else. I will be making a product page on my website soon for this product (if it is not there already), but the concept of this device came from research that states when you take care of others you feel better as well. Like that sense of accomplishment after volunteering.

As for my senior project, it is coming along quickly. My goal to have a finalized form modeled and rendered by midterms was met. I am really happy with how the models came out in such a sort time, however, they are just the start. Currently I am working on Color, material, finish development and adding in the functionality of the product. Researching things like inner component placement and where parting lines should be for possible tooling has been a fun challenge.

I have also been starting to construct my final presentation set up. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I can’t wait to see what my final deliverables end up looking like. The next time I update this blog I will be a newly graduated Industrial designer, with a finished senior project to share! I hope you enjoyed this new addition to my industrial design journey, and I look forward to posting again five weeks from now!
