Lighting Projects
Lighting Projects
I have made two lighting projects while studying Industrial design. One was a light that told a story of sustainability and the other told a transformative narrative based on my mother's life.
Stories
One light tells a story of sustainability by using one-use products (cotton pads) visually shaped to represent nature. The other tells the story of my mother growing up in a time of generational and cultural change in America.

Sustainability
For this light, we were only able to use one material for the main parts of the light. We had to use at least 200 of those items and I chose single-use cotton pads. I thought that making the light look like nature would make the light a thinking piece. The contrast of the single-use material in the form of nature makes the viewer think about the environmental impact of these types of products.

Transformative Narrative
This brief for this project was to tell the story of transformation from someone that has faced hardship in their life. I chose my mother. She grew up in a time of great societal and cultural pressure. Her family loved her but didn't support her passions fully because of societal guidelines. Fast forward to today, and she is pursuing her lifelong passion for land development and has transformed into the person she has always dreamed of being.

Concept Development
To show her growth I wanted to have the light evolve as she did. I made a mood board to reflect the adjectives I wanted the light to evoke as it transformed.

Final Light Story

Early Childhood-Conformity
The box cages in the light, this represents my mother's inner passions being looked over as she was assigned a role based on her gender. The spheres on the outside represent the opportunities that are not available because of the cage of societal and cultural conformity.

College- Concealed
The light is my mother's passion shining through in college as she pursued a career in Interior design. Even though she was doing something close to her dream she was still blocked from her original passion for land development and home construction. This is represented by the box still being over the light.

Present- Transformation
The box is taken away and the inside is revealed; the light is transformed. The opportunities are no longer blocked and my mother is now pursuing all her passions with determination and confidence.

Lighting Projects
Working on both of these lighting designs helped me to learn how to tell a story through design. They also helped me to learn to prototype in a clean and professional way.
